Humidity

The term applied to the presence of moisture in the atmosphere is ‘Humidity' which may be expressed as 'absolutely' or 'relatively'.

Humidity, whether absolute or relative, varies with temperature.

The amount of moisture in the atmosphere is related to latitude as temperature varies with latitude.

Absolute humidity is the actual amount of water-vapour present in a certain quantity of air and is usually expressed in terms of the number of grammes per unit volume.

Cold air has a low absolute humidity while warmer air has a higher absolute humidity.

‘Relative humidity’ is the amount of vapour present, expressed as a percentage of the total amount that would be present, if the air was saturated.

Relative humidity varies not only with 'absolute humidity' but with the temperature of the air, for as the temperature rises so the relative humidity falls.

Conversely, when a mass of unsaturated air is cooled, the relative humidity rises until it reaches the point of saturation at 100%.
